And again, I wish he was given more time to breathe. Seeing him go from an honest fan of Vikram’s to a poor victim of the big bad Colonel’s performance was certainly painful largely because of Menon’s commitment to his boy scout act. The best out of the supporting cast is undoubtedly Siddharth Menon’s Nadir Haq. I just think that more would’ve been better. But I can’t exactly complain about what we get. I feel that a lot could’ve been extracted from talented actors like Jitendra, Aahana, Jatin, Krishna, and Suchitra. I don’t know about you but I would’ve killed more zombies and even sacrifice something or someone to see her do more damage than she was allowed to do in the episodes. Her determinism seems well placed and necessary. When it’s not, she won’t waste a second and cut your throat. She showcases empathy but only when it is needed. I am not a dialect expert but she’s as good with her Chhattisgarhi as she is with her sickle. And yet she is levelheaded and calm enough to deal with the predicament they are in. She’s the exact opposite of the Indian soldiers who have apparently faced way more death and destruction than a couple of villagers. Viineet’s talent is aptly matched by Manjiri Pupala’s Puniya, who plays one of the villagers who are aware of the land’s history. It’s quite challenging to balance oneself between hardcore action and complex layers of emotion but my man Viineet does it like it’s a walk in the park (Or jungle in this case). And since the writing and direction don’t help him a lot, he uses his acting chops to convince you that he isn’t the hero everyone thinks he is. He’s the living embodiment of the phrase “heavy lies the head that wears the crown”.

He isn’t comfortable in his own skin and you can feel the pain he carries with himself every time he’s on-screen. He worships a false idol and somewhere deep down he knows that and that’s why there’s never any conviction in his demeanour. He isn’t comfortable in the situation he is in. He isn’t comfortable with the orders he’s being given.
He isn’t comfortable with his achievements. His character Vikram Sirohi is a broken man desperately in need of redemption. And he has already begun 2020 with a bang in Betaal. Last year, he hit a hattrick with Bard of Blood, Aadhaar, and Saand Ki Aankh.

No matter how good or the bad the script, the direction, or any other element of filmmaking has been in a movie or a TV show, Kumar has consistently been the best thing about it. The first time that I had noticed Viineet Kumar was in Gangs of Wasseypur and since then he has never disappointed me. Viineet Kumar and Manjiri Pupala will keep you glued to the screen with their performances. The villagers protest against it but they’re forcefully removed and that unleashes a horror that was dormant for years. The story is set in a remote village in Nilja which has to be cleared for construction. It stars Viineet Kumar, Aahana Kumar, Suchitra Pillai, Manjiri Pupala, Jatin Goswami, Siddharth Menon, Jitendra Joshi, Ankur Vikal, and Krishna Singh Bisht. It is a co-production of Blumhouse Productions and Shah Rukh Khan’s Red Chillies Entertainment.

The series is shot by Srinivas Achary and Tanay Satam, edited by Abhijit Deshpande and Sangeeth Varghese, and the music is composed by Naren Chandavarkar and Benedict Taylor (Yes, they’re the same peeps who were in charge of Paatal Lok’s score).
It is written by Graham, Adhir Bhat, and Suhani Kanwar. Betaal is one such example.īetaal is directed by Patrick Graham and Nikhil Mahajan. So, you can imagine what an uphill task it must be for anyone trying to make a horror film or show. But the genre overall is still known for its weakest attempts, courtesy of Ram Gopal Varma’s later films, and the Raaz franchise. There were good attempts here and there with movies like Phobia, Tumbbad, Kaun, Bhool Bhulaiyaa, and Bhoot - Part One: The Haunted Ship.

However, somewhere between then and now, filmmakers forgot how to do it and butchered the genre. And while the storytelling and scares are middling, the series more than makes up for it with stellar performances from Viineet Kumar and Manjiri Pupala.Ĭontrary to popular opinion, Indians used to ace horror with TV shows like Aahat, Ssshhhh Koi Hai, Vikram Aur Betaal, and more. It is loaded with subtext, great make-up design, and cinematography. Netflix’s Betaal puts a new spin on the age-old rules associated with zombies by making them undead British soldiers and pitting them against a ragtag group of Indian soldiers.
